Israel has launched a significant assault on the Houthis, who are Iran-backed militias. On Sunday, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared, “No place is too far for us.” The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that dozens of aircraft participated in these airstrikes, targeting various facilities. This included fighter jets, power plants, and sea ports at Ras Issa and Hodeidah in Yemen.
According to the IDF, “The IDF attacked power plants and a port, which are used to import oil. Through this infrastructure, the Houthi regime transfers Iranian weapons to the region and supplies for military purposes, including oil.” The Houthi-run health ministry reported that four individuals were killed, and 29 others were wounded in these strikes.
The strikes on Houthis came after the Yemen-based military group fired missiles and drones at Israel over the previous two days, claiming it was in “solidarity with Palestinians.” The Houthis escalated their attacks following the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate against Israel for the assassination of their leader and launched a counterattack by firing rockets into northern Israel. The IDF confirmed that 35 rockets were launched from Lebanese territory, with 25 landing in open areas near Haifa Bay. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
Meanwhile, Lebanon is seeking diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire with Israel. Lebanon’s Information Minister Ziad Makary stated, “It is certain that the Lebanese government wants a ceasefire.”
Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati also emphasized in a televised address that his country had “no option but the diplomatic option” to end Israel’s aggression.
Israeli actions in Lebanon have intensified over the past two weeks, with Beirut confirming more than 1,000 fatalities due to the strikes. Hundreds of thousands have fled their homes in southern Lebanon to escape Israeli airstrikes.
The U.S. has also backed a ceasefire deal, even as Israel rejected the proposal and ordered strikes to eliminate Nasrallah. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told CNN, “An all-out war with Hezbollah, certainly with Iran, is not the way to do that.”
