Israel has accused six Al Jazeera journalists, including Anas al-Sharif, Hossam Shabat, Ismael Abu Omar, and Talal Arrouki, of having ties with Hamas, while Ashraf Saraj and Alaa Salameh are linked to Islamic Jihad. Al Jazeera denied these claims, calling them false and baseless. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) cited documents found in Gaza to support their accusations.
Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have accused six Al Jazeera journalists of being militants affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad. According to the IDF, documents found in Gaza provide evidence of these journalists’ ties to the militant groups. These documents include personnel tables, terrorist training course lists, phone directories, and salary records for militants. The IDF claimed that the journalists are driving Hamas propaganda within Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera, however, condemned the accusations, stating they are fabricated attempts to silence the remaining journalists in Gaza. The network emphasized that these allegations emerged after their report on potential war crimes committed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), based in New York, also criticized Israel’s accusations, stating that similar claims in the past have lacked credible evidence. CPJ referenced the killing of Al Jazeera correspondent Ismail Al Ghoul, where a document presented by the IDF contained conflicting information about his military ranking.
Al Jazeera confirmed that at least four of its journalists have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza since the war erupted in October 2023. In May 2024, the Israeli government ordered the closure of Al Jazeera’s local offices, marking the first time Israel shut down a foreign news outlet. Israeli police also raided the network’s hotel room in East Jerusalem and confiscated its broadcasting equipment.
So far, at least 128 journalists have died in the ongoing conflict, including 123 Palestinians, two Israelis, and three Lebanese.
