New Delhi, August 15: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the appointment of IPS officer Nalin Prabhat as the new Special Director General (DG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police. Nalin Prabhat, a highly decorated officer with a distinguished career, will assume the role of the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir after the retirement of the current DGP, R R Swain, on September 30.
Nalin Prabhat, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, is known for his expertise and leadership in various critical roles. His appointment as the Special DG of J&K Police comes into effect immediately, as per the official order released by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The order further states that Prabhat will take over as the DGP of Jammu and Kashmir post the retirement of R R Swain.
At 55, Nalin Prabhat brings with him a wealth of experience, having served in several key positions across various police forces. He has been awarded the police gallantry medal three times for his outstanding service. Notably, he has led the specialized anti-Naxal police force ‘Greyhounds’ in Andhra Pradesh, where his efforts in counter-insurgency operations were widely recognized.
In addition to his tenure in Andhra Pradesh, Prabhat has also held significant positions in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He was the Inspector General (IG) of operations in Kashmir and later served as the Additional Director General (ADG) of CRPF, where he played a crucial role in managing operations in the region.
His appointment to Jammu and Kashmir comes following a decision by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which approved a proposal from the MHA to curtail Prabhat’s tenure as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG). The order issued by the ACC also facilitated Prabhat’s inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre for a period of three years, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Nalin Prabhat’s extensive experience in both operational and administrative roles is expected to bring significant strategic advantages to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, especially at a time when the region faces complex security challenges.
With Prabhat at the helm, the Jammu and Kashmir Police are anticipated to continue their efforts in maintaining peace and security in the region, drawing from his rich background in counter-insurgency and operational leadership.
