The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned two new railway lines and one multi-tracking project under the Ministry of Railways. This initiative is designed to bolster connectivity, reduce logistics costs, minimize oil imports, and lower CO2 emissions. The total investment for these projects stands at ₹6,456 crore, with completion expected by 2028-29.
These projects will span across seven districts in Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh, adding about 300 kilometers to the existing railway network. In addition, 14 new stations will be established, enhancing connectivity for two aspirational districts: Nuapada and East Singhbhum. Approximately 1,300 villages and 11 lakh people will benefit directly from the new line projects, while the multi-tracking initiative will improve connectivity for another 1,300 villages and 19 lakh people.
The approved projects align with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, aimed at seamless movement of people, goods, and services. These projects are part of the vision to make India “Atmanirbhar,” fostering regional development and self-employment opportunities.
The capacity enhancement work will result in an additional freight traffic of 45 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), crucial for the transport of commodities like agriculture products, coal, and iron ore. The environmentally friendly railways will help meet climate goals by reducing oil imports by 10 crore litres and lowering CO2 emissions by 240 crore kg, which is equivalent to planting 9.7 crore trees.
