India sharply rebuked Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in which he raised the Kashmir issue once again. Exercising its right of reply, Indian diplomat Bhavika Mangalanandan stated that Pakistan had long coveted Indian territory and used terrorism to disrupt elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.
“As the world knows, Pakistan has consistently used cross-border terrorism as a weapon against its neighbors,” Mangalanandan said. “It has attacked our Parliament, Mumbai, marketplaces, and pilgrimage routes. For such a country to speak about violence elsewhere is hypocrisy at its worst.”
Sharif, during his speech on Friday, compared the situation in Jammu and Kashmir to Palestine, arguing that the people of Kashmir had “struggled for freedom and self-determination for decades.” He urged India to reverse the abrogation of Article 370 and called for dialogue under UN Security Council resolutions in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
India rejected these claims, asserting that terrorism and dialogue cannot go hand in hand. “There can be no compromise with terrorism. Pakistan must understand that cross-border terrorism against India will inevitably invite consequences,” the Indian representative declared.
India also highlighted Pakistan’s questionable human rights record, referencing the 1971 genocide and ongoing persecution of minorities in the country. It questioned Pakistan’s credibility in speaking on issues of intolerance, pointing to its historical associations with notorious terrorists like Osama bin Laden and involvement in global terrorism.
Sharif’s remarks about India expanding its military capabilities against Pakistan and his concerns over growing Islamophobia were also dismissed by India. It called these comments “unacceptable” and “a travesty,” stating that Pakistan’s attempts to distort the truth would not change the reality.
India’s stance remains clear, as it reiterated that Kashmir is an inalienable part of the country, and Pakistan’s narrative on the issue cannot alter the truth.
