Aakhir Tak – In Depth
In a significant move toward de-escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the resumption of patrolling in Ladakh’s disputed regions. He revealed that following the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on October 21, 2024, both India and China agreed to return to pre-April 2020 patrol routines. This development primarily addresses key regions such as Demchok and Depsang, where tension has remained high since the standoff began.
Jaishankar, addressing the press in Mumbai, shared that the MoU, effective from October 21, would allow patrolling in northern Ladakh, including hotspots like Zabsang. This action, intended to restore stability and cooperation, aims to reduce the risk of confrontation. As part of the agreement, heavily armed soldiers from both sides have started disengaging in eastern Ladakh, with this process projected for completion by October 28-29. However, Jaishankar noted that further discussions are essential for long-term disengagement and effective border management across all remaining contentious zones.
Jaishankar credited India’s armed forces and diplomatic efforts for their crucial role in negotiating this breakthrough. Despite challenging conditions, India’s military has successfully maintained the nation’s security while opening avenues for diplomatic resolution. Talks are expected to continue, as both nations work to establish stable patrolling mechanisms, prioritizing peace along their shared borders.
