Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Amidst the long-standing India-China border dispute, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, in Vientiane, Laos, on Wednesday. This meeting took place on the sidelines of a conclave of the ten-nation ASEAN grouping and some of its dialogue partners. It follows the recent completion of troop disengagement by Indian and Chinese militaries from two final standoff points in Eastern Ladakh.
“Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh holding a bilateral meeting with Chinese Defence Minister Mr Dong Jun in Vientiane, Lao PDR,” Singh’s office announced on X (formerly Twitter). Indian and Chinese militaries concluded the disengagement exercise in Demchok and Depsang late last month, following an agreement reached after a series of negotiations.
Both sides resumed patrolling activities in these areas after a gap of almost four and a half years. This step represents a positive development towards resolving the border dispute. Rajnath Singh began a three-day visit to Vientiane on Wednesday, primarily to attend the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus).
ADMM-Plus comprises the ten-nation ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and its eight dialogue partners – India, China, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia, and the United States. Laos is hosting the meeting in its capacity as the current chair of ADMM-Plus. The meeting focuses on regional security and cooperation. Rajnath Singh’s meeting with Dong Jun highlights the importance of this platform.
This meeting provides an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss future cooperation. However, a complete resolution of the border dispute remains pending. Further talks and diplomatic efforts are needed.
Key Takeaways to Remember
The meeting between the Indian and Chinese defense ministers is a significant step towards resolving the border dispute in Eastern Ladakh. However, a complete solution is still pending.
