Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Rajnath Singh hailed the breakthrough in resolving the border tensions between India and China, highlighting that the agreement is the result of continuous dialogue between the two nations. Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2024 in New Delhi, he emphasized the importance of diplomatic and military efforts in restoring patrolling and grazing rights along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 severely strained relations between India and China. However, following months of high-level negotiations, both nations have reached a consensus to allow Indian forces to resume patrolling in key areas like Depsang and Demchok, which had been flashpoints in the standoff. This resumption of activities is seen as a significant confidence-building measure.
Rajnath Singh underscored that “the power of persistent dialogue” has led to this solution and that India remains committed to diplomacy without compromising its national security. “Our pursuit of peace does not mean compromising on security,” he stated firmly, reiterating that India will always protect its borders.
This agreement is viewed as a diplomatic victory for India, as it comes after 21 rounds of military talks and 17 meetings under the working mechanism. The restoration of patrolling in Depsang and Demchok, where Chinese forces had encroached, provides hope for reducing broader territorial disputes. The 3,488 km long border between India and China has long been a source of contention, but this breakthrough could signal a path toward further reconciliation.
