Canada’s Serious Charges: What Did the US and New Zealand Say on India-Canada Dispute?
In the ongoing diplomatic tension between India and Canada, allies like the United States and New Zealand have voiced their concerns. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that Canada’s allegations against India in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar “need to be taken seriously.” He also expressed concerns over India not cooperating with Canada in the investigation. This remark has further fueled the ongoing dispute.
The dispute revolves around the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in Surrey last year. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau directly accused India of being involved in the incident. India has rejected these allegations as “baseless,” accusing Trudeau of politicizing the issue for electoral gain among Canada’s Sikh community. India has also claimed that Canada has not provided any credible evidence to back its claims.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters also commented on the matter. He stated that if the allegations outlined by Canadian law enforcement were proven, they would be “very concerning.” However, he refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation, stressing the importance of respecting the rule of law and judicial processes.
India, in turn, has accused Canada of sheltering individuals involved in organized crime. In May this year, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticized Canada’s immigration policy, following the arrest of three Indian nationals allegedly linked to Nijjar’s killing. He noted that India had repeatedly warned Canada about these individuals, but no action was taken.
The diplomatic strain between India and Canada deepened further when India recalled its High Commissioner from Canada and expelled six Canadian diplomats. The Nijjar assassination case has thus sparked a new rift in the global political landscape between these two nations.
