In a poignant plea to the Supreme Court, IAS aspirant Avinash Dubey has called for urgent intervention following the tragic deaths of three students at a coaching centre in Delhi‘s Old Rajinder Nagar. The students, who were preparing for the UPSC exams, lost their lives due to severe flooding caused by recent rains.
Urgent Plea to the Supreme Court
Avinash Dubey has reached out to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, urging immediate action against those responsible for the fatal incident. In his letter, Dubey described the living conditions in areas like Old Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar as “akin to living like insects,” emphasizing the dire need for judicial intervention to address these recurring issues.
The Tragic Incident
On Saturday evening, the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle coaching institute was inundated following heavy rainfall. The victims, identified as Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalvin from Kerala, were among the many students struggling with inadequate infrastructure.
A Call for Accountability
Dubey criticized the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for their “apathy” towards proper drainage and flood management. He highlighted that annual flooding in these coaching hubs has been a persistent problem, exacerbating the living conditions for students.
Judicial and Police Actions
In response to the tragedy, a Delhi court has placed the five accused—four co-owners of the coaching centre and a car driver—in judicial custody for 14 days. The Delhi Police has also requested the MCD to report on the de-silting status of the drains near the coaching centre.
The plea by Avinash Dubey underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students. The Supreme Court’s intervention could pave the way for addressing these critical issues and preventing future tragedies.
