NATO-grade weapons are increasingly found in the hands of criminals and terrorists in India, raising serious national security concerns. The recent recovery of a firearm meant for NATO forces in Punjab highlights a troubling pattern. On a routine check in Punjab’s Sheron area, police intercepted a car being driven recklessly. Harpreet Singh and Lovepreet Singh, known criminals, were arrested, and four Glock 19 pistols, including one inscribed ‘Made for NATO army,’ were recovered along with Rs 4.8 lakhs in hawala money. Investigations revealed links to a Pakistan-based smuggler who transported weapons and drugs into India using drones.
The influx of NATO and US-made weapons in India is not limited to Punjab. Similar seizures have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, where Pakistan-backed terrorists are increasingly deploying advanced American weaponry, including M4 carbines, M16 rifles, and night-vision equipment, left behind by US forces in Afghanistan. These weapons pose a significant threat to Indian security forces and civilians.
A critical source of these arms is the chaotic 2021 withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, which left billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment behind. This cache was seized by the Taliban, who have since sold these weapons to various terrorist groups, including those targeting India. The arms have also surfaced in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, highlighting their global spread.
The organized smuggling of high-tech weapons into India often involves brokers who connect sellers and buyers, facilitated by Pakistani intelligence agents. This illicit trade has severe implications for India’s security and underscores the urgent need for better control and tracking of military-grade arms by global powers.
