Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared he will not allow ‘Miya’ Muslims to “take over” Assam. This statement came amid criticism from opposition parties who accused him of bias.
During an assembly session on Tuesday, Sarma addressed adjournment motions filed by opposition groups regarding the law and order situation in Assam. The debate was sparked by the recent rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
Sarma defended his position by stating that the crime rate in the state has remained stable when adjusted for population growth. In response to allegations of partisanship, he firmly asserted, “I will take sides. What can you do about it?”
He questioned the rationale behind moving people from Lower Assam to Upper Assam, suggesting that it was part of a strategy for ‘Miya’ Muslims to dominate the region. Sarma’s comments fueled a heated exchange in the assembly, leading to a brief adjournment as members from both the ruling and opposition parties engaged in a disruption.
The adjournment motions, initiated by Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and Independent legislator Akhil Gogoi, sought to address rising crime rates, particularly crimes against women, in Assam.
