Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren launched a strong attack against the BJP during an election rally at Ranka in the Garhwa Assembly seat on Sunday. He accused BJP leaders of having “double standards” on Bangladesh and questioned the Centre’s move to grant asylum to former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when she was ousted from power in her country.
Soren questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the Constitution, stating, “Prime Minister Modi bowed before the Constitution during his oath. He said the country would run as per the Constitution, ensuring equal rights for all sections of society. I want to ask him if any internal arrangements were made with Bangladesh. Why did you allow Sheikh Hasina’s helicopter to land and grant her refuge?”
The Chief Minister’s comments came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, at a rally in Ranchi, accused the JMM-led government of fostering Bangladeshi infiltrators and stated that Jharkhand’s tribal population was dwindling due to demographic changes.
Shah also promised that the BJP, if elected in the upcoming Assembly elections, would enact strict laws to reclaim land from infiltrators and expel them.
In response, Soren questioned why electricity generated in Jharkhand was being supplied to Bangladesh while local residents endured pollution from power plants. He asked, “Isn’t it the Centre’s responsibility to guard the borders and prevent infiltration? State governments have no role in this. Why don’t you check infiltration in states governed by the BJP?”
Elections for the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20, with the counting on November 23. The ruling JMM, part of the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, will contest 43 seats.
