Heavy Rain Pounds Mumbai, Red Alert Issued, Showers to Continue Throughout Week
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai and various parts of Maharashtra. The IMD has issued a red alert for Nashik, while orange alerts have been placed for Palghar, Pune, Nandurbar, and Dhule. Additionally, nearly every city in Maharashtra is under a yellow alert for the day.
Following the recent trend of erratic monsoons, Mumbai is bracing for widespread rain, particularly in the Konkan region. According to the latest bulletin from the weather department, a cyclonic circulation is lying over north-central Maharashtra, which is expected to cause more downpours in the coming days.
Heavy rain lashed out at several places in Mumbai today. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has predicted a generally cloudy sky over Mumbai today, with chances of moderate rain and thundershowers across the city and suburbs. The weather department also anticipates fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall throughout the week in the Konkan and Goa region, along with central Maharashtra.
However, September 27 is marked as a critical day, with heavy rainfall expected in isolated locations. The IMD has predicted that some areas could receive more than 12 centimeters of rain. Furthermore, from September 28, the risk of heavy rainfall will extend to various parts of central Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Officials are urging residents to remain cautious and prepared, as isolated heavy rain is projected for these regions. The agency has highlighted a moderate flash flood risk for several watersheds, especially in the south Gujarat region and the coastal areas of Konkan and Goa.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, ready to respond to any emergencies arising from flooding.
On September 25, heavy rains pounded Mumbai and its surrounding areas, overwhelming the city and pushing September’s rainfall totals well past the monthly average of 350 mm. The IMD reported rainfall of 169 mm at Colaba and 170 mm at Santacruz, with some neighborhoods experiencing as much as 276 mm in just a few hours.
