In a gripping presidential debate, Kamala Harris outshone Donald Trump with a standout performance. The biggest revelation of the night was that Harris is a gun owner, a fact noted in 2019 but not widely recognized.
Harris adeptly triggered and challenged Trump, steering the debate away from his vulnerabilities on the economy and illegal immigration. She painted a positive vision of an “opportunity economy,” a strong military, affordable healthcare, and women’s rights. Trump, on the other hand, focused on immigration issues, even making bizarre claims about Haitian immigrants in Ohio.
From the outset, Harris confidently shook Trump’s hand, establishing her leadership presence. She successfully navigated the debate, avoiding direct attacks on her record while highlighting Trump’s shortcomings.
Republicans accused ABC News moderators of bias for fact-checking Trump but not holding Harris to the same standard. Trump struggled with the race question and deflected to inflation, while Harris countered effectively.
On foreign policy, Trump avoided a direct answer on whether he wanted Ukraine to win. The debate saw Trump missing opportunities to challenge Harris, and even Trump’s supporters conceded his loss. Harris demonstrated herself as a confident and composed leader, but whether this will decisively impact the election remains to be seen in the coming weeks.
