In Gujarat, severe rainfall has led to the death of 28 people over the past three days, with nearly 18,000 residents evacuated from flood-hit areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 11 districts and a yellow alert for 22 districts, warning of more heavy rain.
According to government reports, fatalities have occurred across multiple districts. One person has died in Morbi, Vadodara, Bharuch, Jamnagar, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dwarka, and Dang. Meanwhile, Anand reported six deaths, Ahmedabad four, and Gandhinagar, Kheda, Mahisagar, Dahod, and Surendranagar two each. Seven people remain missing after a tractor-trolley was swept away while crossing an overflowing causeway in Morbi.
Rain Alerts Across Gujarat
The IMD’s red alert covers the Kachchh and Saurashtra regions, including the districts of Kachchh, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Botad, Gir Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar. A yellow alert has been issued for North, Central, and South Gujarat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel of full central support in tackling the crisis. Even as the rain has temporarily stopped in Vadodara, flooding persists in low-lying areas due to the Vishwamitri river overflowing its banks.
Rescue and Relief Operations
Over 6,000 people have been relocated to safer locations across the state. The Gujarat government has sought assistance from the Indian Army, deploying six columns in Dwarka, Anand, Vadodara, Kheda, Morbi, and Rajkot. Additionally, 14 NDRF and 22 SDRF platoons are actively involved in rescue efforts.
Visuals from across Gujarat show severe waterlogging and flooding, with rescue teams working tirelessly to evacuate affected residents. The road leading to the Statue of Unity has also been damaged.
IMD Forecast and Warnings
The IMD forecasts that the depression will likely move towards the Arabian Sea by August 30. However, there is a possibility of brief intensification over the northeast Arabian Sea. The department warns of potential localized flooding, waterlogging, and the closure of underpasses, particularly in urban areas.
