Green Corridor Triumph: Heart Transplant Completed in Record Time
In an extraordinary display of coordination and speed, a green corridor enabled the successful transplantation of a heart from Kolkata to Gurugram in a record time of just 13 minutes. This life-saving operation, which took place at Fortis Hospital, represents a significant milestone in medical logistics and emergency transport.
The Urgent Need for a Heart
On July 31, a 34-year-old resident of Rohtak, Haryana, faced a dire medical emergency. Battling severe heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy, he required an immediate heart transplant to survive. A suitable donor heart was identified at a government hospital in Kolkata, setting off a high-stakes operation to transport the organ.
Establishing the Green Corridor
To ensure the heart reached Fortis Hospital swiftly, a green corridor was established. The Kolkata Police cleared a high-speed route, minimizing traffic delays. The heart was airlifted to Delhi on an Indigo Airlines flight, where another green corridor was activated by the Delhi and Gurugram Police.
The Race Against Time
The final stretch of the journey, from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi to Fortis Hospital in Gurugram, covered 18 kilometers. Remarkably, this segment was completed in just 13 minutes, thanks to the dedicated efforts of over 100 police officers who ensured the ambulance faced no obstructions.
Successful Transplant and Team Efforts
The transplant procedure, led by Dr. Udgeath Dhir at Fortis Hospital, was a resounding success. Dr. Dhir emphasized the critical nature of the operation, stating, “Immediate heart transplant was necessary in this case because the patient was in a critically advanced heart failure stage due to dilated cardiomyopathy. A heart transplant was the only option in this condition.”
This successful transplant is a notable achievement for Fortis Hospital, marking its first heart transplant. The hospital administration expressed deep gratitude to the donor family, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Indigo Airlines, and the police forces involved.
A Milestone for Medical Logistics
The successful execution of this green corridor operation underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts in emergency medical logistics. The quick and efficient transport of the donor heart not only saved a life but also set a new benchmark for similar future operations.
As the patient now recovers in the ICU, the medical and logistical teams involved in this operation are celebrated for their remarkable teamwork and dedication.
