Google has entered into a significant agreement to utilize small nuclear reactors to power its artificial intelligence (AI) operations. The partnership with Kairos Power will involve the use of small modular reactors (SMR) designed to meet the rising energy demands of AI technologies. This deal marks a transformative shift in the tech industry’s approach to energy sustainability.
The first reactor from Kairos Power is anticipated to come online by 2030, with additional reactors planned through 2035. Collectively, these reactors are expected to generate up to 500 megawatts of power, providing a consistent and carbon-free energy source for Google’s data centers.
In a statement, Google highlighted that “the next generation of advanced nuclear reactors offers a new pathway to accelerate nuclear deployment.” The company’s senior director of energy and climate emphasized that “the grid needs these kinds of clean, reliable sources of energy.”
This move aligns with a growing trend among tech giants seeking sustainable energy solutions for their expanding AI operations. Recently, Microsoft announced plans to utilize energy from the Three Mile Island nuclear facility, showcasing a broader industry shift.
While nuclear energy offers a consistent power source compared to solar and wind, it is accompanied by concerns about waste disposal, potential accidents, and high costs. Nevertheless, as the energy demands of AI continue to surge, tech companies increasingly view nuclear power as a viable solution to their growing energy needs.
