Emergency Film Release Postponed Again: CBFC Cites Concerns

The much-anticipated release of Kangana Ranaut’s biographical political drama “Emergency” has been postponed yet again. The film, which portrays the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was initially scheduled for release on September 6 but has faced multiple delays. According to government sources, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has postponed the release due to concerns that the film might hurt religious sentiments.

“Religious sentiments cannot be hurt. There is some sensitive content in the movie,” said the sources, explaining the CBFC’s decision. Various religious organizations have expressed their concerns, urging the government to take the matter seriously. The delay comes in the wake of complaints from several Sikh organizations, including the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), which has called for a ban on the film, alleging it misrepresents the Sikh community and could incite hatred.

The film has been controversial since its trailer release on August 14, which depicted sensitive events related to the separatist Khalistan movement. Viewers criticized the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and the omission of critical historical incidents like Operation Blue Star and the bombing of the Akal Takht Sahib.

CBFC members reportedly faced threats, prompting further scrutiny of the film. Despite the growing controversy, the filmmakers have not yet responded to these allegations. The repeated delays have sparked discussions on the balance between creative freedom and religious sensitivity, highlighting the ongoing debate in the Indian film industry.
