In a significant move, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sealed the basement of Drishti IAS coaching institute located in Mukherjee Nagar. This action is part of a broader crackdown on coaching centers violating building regulations.
The MCD’s decision to seal the basement comes amidst controversy surrounding the death of three students at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar. These students tragically lost their lives due to flooding in a basement that was being used as a library. This incident has heightened scrutiny on the safety standards of coaching institutes in Delhi.
Drishti IAS, among several other coaching centers, has been found operating in basements that are intended solely for storage. The MCD’s recent anti-encroachment drive has led to the sealing of basements in several coaching centers, including those operated by Vajiram and Ravi and SriRam IAS.
The MCD’s actions extend beyond sealing basements. The corporation has also launched a major anti-encroachment drive in Old Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, targeting illegal structures and storm drain obstructions. This move aims to prevent waterlogging, which was a significant factor in the recent student deaths.
Furthermore, the MCD has faced criticism for its handling of storm water drains. In response, the corporation has terminated a junior engineer and suspended an assistant engineer from the Karol Bagh Zone, underscoring the seriousness with which it is addressing these issues.
This ongoing situation underscores the critical need for adherence to building codes and safety regulations in educational institutions. The recent events highlight the importance of ensuring that such spaces are safe for students and compliant with all relevant regulations.
