Donald Trump Backs IVF, Kamala Harris Talks Guns: Party Lines Blur in Election
The 2024 U.S. presidential race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is redefining party policies as both candidates adopt positions that appeal to voters from the opposite side. Harris is focusing on gun ownership and border security, while Trump is pushing for credit card interest rate caps and advocating for insurance coverage of in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Both candidates are making efforts to expand their coalitions, with Harris targeting suburban Republicans, and Trump making appeals to traditionally Democratic voter bases such as African Americans, Latinos, and labor unions. This shift has caused both candidates to adopt stances that would have once been unimaginable within their own parties.
Former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, now a strong Trump ally, said that many of Trump’s positions on issues were once core Democratic principles. On the other hand, Barbara Comstock, a Republican strategist, feels more aligned with Harris this election cycle, particularly due to her policies on child care tax credits and bipartisan immigration reform.
Trump’s Departure from Traditional GOP Values
Trump has long been known to stray from the GOP’s traditional conservative values, particularly on issues like trade and foreign policy. However, he has taken this divergence further in the 2024 race. Trump’s proposal to cap credit card interest rates at 10% and his support for mandatory IVF insurance coverage have irritated both fiscal and social conservatives.
Kamala Harris’s Approach
In contrast, Kamala Harris has adopted a more organized outreach program to appeal to Republican voters. In recent weeks, her campaign has hosted discussions on abortion rights, border security, and small business creation, featuring prominent Republican voices. She has openly spoken about her support for gun ownership, emphasizing that she is a gun owner and willing to use it for self-defense.
Harris’s strong stance on foreign policy, advocating for U.S. leadership on the global stage, has won her the support of over 100 Republican national security officials, including former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Candidates Still Align with Their Parties
Despite their attempts to appeal to voters from the opposite party, both Trump and Harris largely remain aligned with their traditional party platforms. Trump opposes abortion rights and is proud of his role in overturning Roe v. Wade. He also supports strict immigration measures and expanding tax cuts that primarily benefit the wealthy. Harris, on the other hand, supports abortion rights, stricter gun control measures, and climate change initiatives, although she has softened her stance on fracking.
