Doctors protesting against the RG Kar Medical College incident have demanded a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They insist on a live telecast and representation by a 30-member delegation to address their concerns.
The West Bengal government initially invited the doctors to a meeting, suggesting a smaller delegation of 10-15 members, but the doctors refused, emphasizing the need for a larger, more representative group. The doctors’ main demands include “Justice for Abhaya” and enhanced safety measures for all women healthcare professionals in the state.
Despite receiving an email from the Health Secretary, the doctors stressed that the communication lacked clarity regarding the Chief Minister’s presence. They sent an email to the Chief Minister’s Office at 3:50 AM, outlining their demands but have yet to receive a response.
The situation escalated after a female trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, sparking widespread protests. The Supreme Court has intervened, ordering the protesting doctors to resume their duties without facing any punitive actions. However, tensions remain high, with doctors calling for immediate government action to ensure workplace safety.
The Chief Secretary later sent another email, inviting the doctors to a meeting at 6 PM, but there is no confirmation if the meeting occurred. The ongoing protests reflect the deep-rooted concerns about safety within the healthcare sector, with doctors urging the state government to take stronger measures to protect medical professionals.
