Shelter Home Conditions Deteriorate: A Crisis Unfolding
A recent revelation from a worker at Delhi’s Asha Kiran shelter home has shed light on severe conditions affecting the inmates. The worker, who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that the shelter’s once-comprehensive diet has drastically diminished. Currently, 25 inmates are reportedly suffering from tuberculosis, highlighting the shelter’s critical state.
Four years ago, the shelter provided a balanced diet of rice, dal, chapati, vegetables, and fruits. However, this has been significantly cut back, leaving inmates with insufficient nutrition. This change has led to deteriorating health among the residents, including a rise in tuberculosis cases. The shelter is also grappling with overcrowding, housing 950 people despite a capacity of only 500.
Alarming Health Statistics and Overcrowding Issues
Recent findings from a sub-divisional magistrate’s (SDM) investigation revealed that 14 inmates have died in the past 20 days. Among these fatalities, only one was a minor. The majority of the deceased were adults, including eight women and six men. The SDM office is awaiting post-mortem reports to determine the exact causes of death, which will be reported to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The NCW has condemned the Delhi government for its neglect, with Chairperson Rekha Sharma criticizing the government’s inaction. In response, Delhi Minister Atishi has called for a magisterial probe to be completed within 48 hours. She also emphasized that those at Asha Kiran receive medical care both within the facility and at local hospitals.
Government Response and Further Actions
Delhi Minister Atishi has asked the additional chief secretary of the Revenue department to conduct a thorough investigation. She stressed the need for medical correlation of the deaths, considering the severe intellectual disabilities of many residents. The Minister assured that immediate action would follow the magisterial report.
