The Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the bursting of firecrackers outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence in Civil Lines, North Delhi. The incident occurred on Friday evening following Kejriwal’s release from Tihar Jail, where his supporters gathered to welcome him with fireworks. According to officials, the FIR was lodged under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobedience to public servant orders.
This incident comes after the Delhi government, on Monday, announced a ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital to curb air pollution ahead of the winter season. The violation of this order led to the registration of the case.
The Supreme Court had granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case linked to the Delhi excise policy, which was filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Kejriwal had been in Tihar Jail for over five months. Upon his release, supporters burst firecrackers outside his official residence, resulting in the current legal action.
