As heavy rains continue to batter Delhi and its surrounding regions, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has issued urgent instructions for officials to address severe waterlogging issues. The city is currently under a ‘red’ alert due to the torrential downpour, which has led to extensive waterlogging and significant traffic disruptions.
Key Focus Areas Amid Heavy Rain
Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has emphasized the need for heightened vigilance among officials. His recent directives aim to ensure minimal disruption to daily life and specifically target areas prone to waterlogging, with a particular focus on locations housing coaching centres. In his post on social media platform X, Saxena stressed, “Officials must remain alert and address waterlogging issues, especially at sites where coaching centres are located.”
Impact on Delhi’s Key Areas
The ongoing rainfall has caused severe inundation in several prominent areas of Delhi. Locations such as Lutyen’s Delhi, Kashmere Gate, and Rajinder Nagar have been significantly affected, with visuals showing extensive waterlogging. Connaught Place and Kamla Nagar, near Delhi University’s North Campus, are also grappling with floodwaters.
The recent rains have reawakened distressing memories of last week’s tragic incident, where the basement of a coaching institute was submerged, resulting in the deaths of three civil services aspirants. This incident underscores the urgency of addressing waterlogging in these critical educational zones.
Traffic Disruptions and Advisory Measures
Traffic movement across the city has been severely impacted. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors, secure windows and doors, and avoid unnecessary travel. The IMD has also recommended seeking safe shelter and avoiding areas with heavy tree cover to mitigate risks.
Recent updates reveal that traffic police are struggling to manage congestion, with affected routes including the carriageway from Moolchand to Chirag Delhi and both carriageways on Anuvrat Marg. Waterlogging under the Savitri flyover has further disrupted traffic on the Outer Ring Road from Chirag Delhi towards Nehru Place. The police have implemented diversions, including rerouting traffic from Chatta Rail red light and Lothian Road, and advising commuters from NS Marg towards ISBT Kashmiri Gate to use alternate routes like Kodia Pul and Mori Gate Boulevard Road.
Ongoing Efforts and Safety Recommendations
Local officials, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Durgesh Pathak, have been actively monitoring waterlogging issues. Pathak visited the affected Old Rajinder Nagar area to oversee the response operations conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
