The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken decisive action following a tragic flooding incident at an IAS coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar. Thirteen coaching centres have been sealed for operating in basements, violating safety norms and building regulations.

The MCD’s action comes after three IAS aspirants tragically lost their lives due to sudden flooding in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle. This incident has brought to light the hazardous conditions in many coaching centres operating in the area.

Mayor’s Statement and Further Actions
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi stated that the MCD is determined to seal all coaching centres violating building norms, especially those operating unauthorized commercial activities in basements. The mayor announced an immediate inquiry to identify any MCD officials responsible for negligence in enforcing building norms.
Protests and Public Response:
The Municipal Corporation has faced criticism for its inadequate enforcement of safety regulations. Activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested outside the Mayor’s residence, demanding accountability for the deaths of the students. The public and activists are calling for stricter enforcement of building norms and immediate action against violators.
Previous Safety Concerns and Legal Actions
The issue of coaching centres violating safety norms is not new. Last year, a massive fire at a coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar prompted a survey of such centres. However, actions were allegedly halted midway. In May this year, the Delhi High Court directed the MCD and the Delhi Development Authority to close down coaching centres operating in violation of fire safety norms.
The recent tragedy highlights the urgent need for strict enforcement of building and safety regulations in Delhi. The MCD’s actions in sealing the coaching centres are a step towards ensuring the safety of students and preventing future incidents. The public and authorities must work together to ensure that such violations are not overlooked and that student safety is prioritized.
