Delhi Coaching Centre Tragedy: Arrests and Political Fallout

Delhi High Court Transfers Coaching Centre Death Probe to CBI

The tragic deaths of three IAS aspirants in a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, have sparked significant action and controversy. In response to mounting criticism and student protests, the Delhi Police have made several arrests related to the incident. Among those detained is an SUV driver, whose vehicle allegedly exacerbated the flooding at the coaching centre.

A viral video showed the SUV driver navigating the flooded road, which intensified the water flow into the coaching centre’s basement. This incident led to the collapse of the building’s iron gate, further worsening the situation. The police have also arrested the building’s owners and the coordinator of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, bringing the total arrests to seven.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an anti-encroachment drive, demolishing illegal structures that were obstructing storm drains and contributing to waterlogging. The MCD has also taken disciplinary actions by terminating a junior engineer and suspending an assistant engineer responsible for the area’s maintenance.

On the political front, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are engaged in a heated blame game. AAP has accused bureaucrats of neglecting drain management, while BJP has criticized the Delhi government’s alleged corruption. The BJP has demanded the resignation of the AAP government, accusing it of mishandling the crisis.

AAP officials have protested outside the Lieutenant Governor’s office, demanding accountability and calling for the removal of the MCD Commissioner. The Lieutenant Governor has assured that those responsible will face consequences.

This tragic event has highlighted severe issues in urban planning and governance in Delhi, with ongoing debates about responsibility and administrative failures.
