“Water filled the basement of a coaching institute in the national capital. NDRF teams are on-site,” stated the Delhi Police.
Student Protests and Relief Efforts
Following the incident, students protested over the deaths of the civil services aspirants after the coaching center’s basement flooded. Authorities are thoroughly searching the coaching center’s basement to locate the missing students.
Delhi BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj and MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi have visited the site to oversee the rescue operations.
Flood Causes and Rescue Operations
Delhi Education Minister Atishi attributed the mishap to heavy evening rains and has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
“There’s news of water filling up the basement of a coaching institute in Rajendra Nagar. Delhi Fire Department and NDRF are on the spot. The Delhi Mayor and local MLA are also there. I am receiving updates on the incident every minute. A magistrate has been ordered to investigate how this happened. Those responsible for this incident will be held accountable,” Atishi posted on X.
“At 7 pm, we received information that the basement of a UPSC coaching institute in Rajendra Nagar was flooded, with a possibility of people being trapped. Waterlogging on the road due to heavy rains this evening has contributed to the situation,” said DCP, Central Delhi, M. Harshavardhan.
He added, “We are investigating how the basement was completely flooded so quickly. It appears that the basement filled rapidly and some people were trapped inside. Delhi Fire Service and NDRF rescue teams are here. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. So far, the body of one female student has been recovered.”
