According to the new seating arrangement in the Delhi Assembly, Chief Minister Atishi has been allotted seat number 1, replacing former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who now occupies seat number 41.
Atishi, who last week became the third female Chief Minister of Delhi, previously sat in seat number 19. The seat numbers for several other Delhi ministers, including Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, and Mukesh Ahlawat, have also been changed.
The seat of the Leader of Opposition, Vijender Gupta, has been moved from 94 to 100. Saurabh Bharadwaj, who became a prominent face of the party during the Lok Sabha elections along with Atishi, has been assigned seat number 2 in the house. He previously occupied seat number 8.
Newly inducted Delhi cabinet minister Mukesh Ahlawat has been given seat number 14. Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the liquor policy case, has been assigned seat number 41.
This new seating arrangement comes just days after Atishi took charge as Delhi’s Chief Minister. The MLA from Kalkaji took office on September 23 but chose not to sit on the chair used by her mentor, Arvind Kejriwal. Instead, she placed it beside her own, symbolizing her continued loyalty to the former Chief Minister.
After taking charge, Atishi stated that she would serve as the Chief Minister for the next four months, much like Bharat from the Ramayana, who ruled Ayodhya in the absence of his elder brother, Lord Ram, by placing his ‘khadaun’ (wooden sandals) on the throne.
“Today, I carry the same burden that Bharat did. Just as he placed Lord Ram’s sandals on the throne and ruled, I will govern Delhi with the same spirit for the next four months,” she said.
It remains to be seen if Atishi will occupy the first seat in the Delhi Assembly or leave it vacant, as she did with Kejriwal’s chair in the Chief Minister’s office.
