Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, announced on Wednesday that the capital is preparing for artificial rain between November 1 and 15 when pollution is expected to peak. The minister revealed a 21-point action plan aimed at combating air pollution in Delhi during the winter.
Rai stated that a letter has been sent to the Union Environment Minister requesting permission for artificial rain, especially during the post-Diwali period and stubble burning season when pollution tends to rise. However, the ministry has yet to respond to the request.
The minister highlighted that Delhi has seen a 34.6% reduction in air pollution between 2016 and 2023. Over the past four years, two crore trees have been planted across the city, contributing to this reduction.
Real-time monitoring of pollution hotspots will be conducted using drones.
A Special Task Force comprising 86 members, including personnel from the environment ministry, transport ministry, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Public Works Department (PWD), will be formed to monitor pollution in the city.
An anti-dust campaign will commence on October 7 to reduce dust pollution in the region.
During winter, 85 machine sweepers and 200 mobile anti-smog guns will be deployed in each assembly constituency of Delhi.
A total of 360 teams will be formed to check pollution certificates of vehicles, according to the minister.
A Green War Room will be set up to tackle the pollution crisis.
The minister also added that a ban on firecrackers will be implemented in Delhi, and a gazette notification will be issued soon.
