How Google’s DeepMind AI Cracked Biology’s Grand Challenge to Win Chemistry Nobel
The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to a team of scientists for their revolutionary work using artificial intelligence to predict protein structures, reshaping the field of structural biology.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper from Google DeepMind “for protein structure prediction.”
Demis Hassabis is the CEO of Google DeepMind in London, while John M. Jumper is a Senior Research Scientist at DeepMind.
Proteins are large, complex molecules essential to life. They are made up of smaller units called amino acids, linked in long chains. The sequence of these amino acids determines a protein’s structure and function.
The team, led by researchers from Google DeepMind, developed AlphaFold, an AI system that has transformed our understanding of protein structures and their roles.
