Congress, AAP Agree on Haryana Alliance

The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), part of the opposition INDIA bloc, have reached an “in-principle understanding” to form an alliance ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, according to sources. This alliance comes after their joint contest in previous Lok Sabha elections across Haryana, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Negotiations between AAP MP Raghav Chaddha and Congress MP KC Venugopal are expected soon, potentially taking place on Tuesday night or tomorrow. The AAP is reportedly demanding around 20 seats in the alliance. Congress has set up a mini-committee to oversee the talks, including members Deepak Babaria, Deepender Singh Hooda, and Ajay Maken. This committee will also address internal conflicts within Congress concerning 12 contested seats.

Haryana’s Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with results to be announced on October 8. Previously, Congress contested nine out of ten Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, while AAP contested one. Despite earlier statements from senior Congress leader Kumari Selja dismissing the possibility of an alliance, recent developments suggest a collaborative approach to the upcoming polls.

Earlier this year, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced plans to contest all 90 seats independently, emphasizing the party’s strength in Haryana. However, this latest understanding with Congress marks a strategic shift as both parties aim to maximize their impact in the upcoming elections.
