CISF Accommodation Issues at RG Kar Hospital

The Centre has moved the Supreme Court, alleging that the West Bengal government has failed to make adequate arrangements for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. This deployment was ordered by the Supreme Court to enhance the security of doctors at the hospital. However, the Centre has now filed a contempt case against the state government, citing poor accommodation facilities for the personnel.

According to the Centre, 92 CISF personnel are stationed at the hospital, including 54 female personnel. The government has argued that these security forces are facing severe accommodation issues, which is affecting their morale and ability to perform their duties effectively. The Supreme Court had ordered the deployment of CISF personnel on August 21 following a tragic incident where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered during her night shift. The deployment was intended to safeguard the hospital and its staff, but the current situation shows a lack of basic facilities for the security forces.

The Centre highlighted that the West Bengal government has not provided proper accommodation, transportation, or storage for security equipment, particularly for the female contingent. This lack of cooperation, the Centre argues, is detrimental to the security measures that were ordered by the Supreme Court.

The central government further claimed that the non-compliance by the state amounts to wilful disregard of the Supreme Court’s orders. The petition emphasized the need for better coordination, arguing that the safety of doctors, especially female doctors, should be a priority. The Centre’s submission also accused the West Bengal government of deliberately obstructing the solution-oriented approach initiated by the Supreme Court, thereby putting its residents at risk.

Despite repeated requests, the Centre alleges that the state government’s inaction reflects a systemic issue where non-cooperation with central agencies has become commonplace. The Centre has urged the Supreme Court to take strict action to ensure that the directives are followed, and adequate facilities are provided for the CISF personnel at RG Kar Hospital.
