Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has issued a stern warning against China’s grey zone tactics along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). While addressing the curtain raiser of the Chanakya Forum Dialogue, he explained that although the current situation is stable, it is far from normal. He emphasized the sensitive nature of the situation, particularly along India’s northern borders.
General Dwivedi remarked, “Positive signals are emerging from diplomatic channels, but the ground reality remains fragile.” He stressed the need to restore the pre-2020 normalcy in the border areas to maintain stability.
Grey Zone Warfare and Need for Vigilance
The Army Chief also discussed the evolving nature of modern warfare, particularly grey zone conflict, which he described as a persistent state of tension below the threshold of traditional war. He cited the examples of Kargil, Galwan, and Doklam, explaining that these events were not full-scale wars but clear instances of grey zone conflict.
“War will come when it comes, but we must stay vigilant during the periods in between,” General Dwivedi remarked, urging all levels of command to adopt a unified approach toward grey zone challenges.
Progress in Jammu and Kashmir
On the subject of Jammu and Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370, General Dwivedi highlighted positive developments. He noted a significant decrease in militant recruitment, stating that “only two militants were recruited in 2024,” signaling a shift toward peace and normalcy in the region.
Theatre Commands and Joint Operations
Regarding theatre commands and joint military operations, General Dwivedi expressed confidence in the military’s unified front. He stated, “There is great consensus among the three service chiefs. Jointness and integration are critical for future warfare.”
Insights on Manipur Conflict
Addressing the unrest in Manipur, General Dwivedi traced the roots of the violence to misinformation and the weaponisation of local communities. He revealed that the Army and Assam Rifles have deployed 126 columns to stabilize the situation, although lasting peace will take time.
General Dwivedi’s address presented a comprehensive view of India’s approach to national security, emphasizing preparedness for both conventional and grey zone threats while contributing to the nation’s broader goal of peace and prosperity.
