Aakhir Tak – In Depth
In a recent discussion with students in Pune, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the India-China border solution as a product of a ‘team effort.’ Jaishankar praised the collaborative work of the Indian military and diplomatic efforts, which fortified India’s position along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He acknowledged the joint role of the Army and government, referring to the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit, where both leaders discussed steps towards resolving the border issue.
Jaishankar noted that the process to normalize relations will take time as rebuilding trust requires consistent efforts. India has increased its budget for border deployment by five times, strengthening its presence in challenging terrains and building necessary infrastructure. This success is attributed to the coordinated approach of the government, military, and diplomacy.
The minister emphasized the need for India to develop its own industrial capabilities. He explained that the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat is not only an economic strategy but also a defensive one, reducing India’s dependency on Chinese supply chains.
This week, India announced a significant breakthrough with China to resume patrols in eastern Ladakh, aiming to ease tensions stemming from the 2020 standoff. Jaishankar stated that disengagement is the immediate focus, as troop proximity could escalate conflicts. In regions like Depsang and Demchok, a mutual agreement was achieved to restore patrolling, marking a positive step towards stability.
