Aakhir Tak – In Depth: The first session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in six years commenced on Monday. PDP MLA Waheed Para introduced a resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370, sparking an uproar in the Assembly. Para submitted the resolution to Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, urging its inclusion in the five-day session’s agenda, even though it was not initially scheduled.

BJP MLAs opposed the move, demanding Para’s suspension for breaking Assembly rules. The Speaker appealed for order, stating that he would review the resolution if formally submitted. National Conference members accused BJP of disrupting proceedings.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dismissed the resolution as a symbolic gesture “only for the cameras” but acknowledged public disapproval of the 2019 abrogation of Article 370. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha pledged efforts to restore full statehood, reflecting public trust in democratic institutions.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti praised Para’s move, tweeting, “Proud of Waheed Para for introducing the resolution to restore Article 370.”
Article 370, once granting special autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, was revoked on August 5, 2019, reclassifying the region as two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
