Champai Soren Quashes BJP Switch Rumors Ahead of Elections

Champai Soren Quashes BJP Switch Rumors Ahead of Elections

Champai Soren Refutes Rumors of Joining BJP Ahead of Jharkhand Elections

In the run-up to the Jharkhand Assembly elections, senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and former Chief Minister Champai Soren has publicly dismissed rumors suggesting his defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The speculation had gained traction following reports that Soren was unhappy with his removal from the Chief Minister’s post in favor of Hemant Soren.

Champai Soren, currently serving as Jharkhand’s Water Resources Minister, addressed these rumors on Saturday, stating, “I don’t know what rumors are being spread. I don’t know what news is being run, so I cannot tell whether it’s true or not. I don’t know anything about it… Hum jahan par hain vahi par hain (I am here only).”

These remarks came amidst growing chatter that the veteran politician might switch allegiance to the BJP due to his alleged dissatisfaction with being ousted from the top position. However, Soren’s statement has put an end to these speculations, reinforcing his commitment to the JMM and its leadership.

BJP’s Response to the Speculations

Further dispelling the rumors, Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that no one from the JMM, including Champai Soren, had approached the BJP. “No one is in touch with us yet. I am also hearing these reports from the channels. Champai Soren is a very senior leader, I do not want to make any informal comment about him,” Sarma said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Champai Soren’s Political Journey

Champai Soren has had a distinguished political career, deeply rooted in the JMM. He was appointed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand following the arrest of Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31 in connection with a land scam case. However, Champai Soren stepped down from the role on July 3 after Hemant Soren secured bail from the Jharkhand High Court.

The decision to reinstate Hemant Soren as the Chief Minister was made after consensus was reached among the INDIA alliance MLAs and leaders to elect him as the JMM legislature party leader.

Despite his brief tenure as Chief Minister, Champai Soren remains a significant figure within the JMM. Representing the Seraikella assembly constituency, he currently holds the positions of Minister for Transport, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Caste and Backward Class Welfare, and Vice-President of the JMM.

Future Political Landscape

As Jharkhand prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, Champai Soren’s reaffirmed loyalty to the JMM is expected to strengthen the party’s position. With his influence and close ties to Hemant Soren, Champai Soren’s role will be pivotal in the JMM’s strategy to retain power in the state.
