Champai Soren Joins BJP After Surveillance Claims

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren recently joined the BJP, accusing the Hemant Soren-led government of tracking his movements. Soren, once a close ally of JMM chief Shibu Soren, said he was shocked to discover he was under surveillance, calling it a “shameful act.” He claimed his decision to switch allegiance to the BJP was solidified after learning of the alleged espionage.

Speaking at a BJP event attended by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other senior leaders, Champai Soren criticized the JMM for its actions. He described his departure as a response to being “tracked and followed,” which he believes was a deliberate act of intrusion by the state’s special branch.

The former JMM leader emphasized that his disillusionment with the party stemmed not only from the surveillance but also from what he viewed as the JMM and Congress’s neglect of tribal welfare. Soren asserted that only the BJP could lead Jharkhand’s tribal communities towards a prosperous future, and he pledged to work with the BJP to build a new Jharkhand.

Champai Soren’s allegations were supported by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who accused the JMM-led coalition of monitoring Soren’s movements for six months. Sarma predicted that the people of Jharkhand would respond decisively in the upcoming elections.

Soren, who joined the BJP along with his son Babulal, stated that his supporters encouraged him to stay in mainstream politics despite his dissatisfaction with the JMM. He criticized the Hemant Soren government, accusing it of failing to prioritize the needs of Jharkhand’s tribal communities.

Champai Soren’s move to the BJP is seen as a significant gain for the party, which aims to strengthen its appeal among the state’s Scheduled Tribes (STs). His public criticism of the JMM and his alignment with the BJP underscore the shifting political dynamics in Jharkhand as the state prepares for its upcoming elections.

The former Chief Minister, who resigned from his post earlier this year, has vowed to work towards a brighter future for Jharkhand’s tribals under the BJP’s banner. He expressed confidence that the BJP would provide the leadership and policies necessary to address the community’s long-standing concerns.
