Centre Forms Panel to Probe Trainee IAS Officer Puja Khedkar’s Disability Claims
The Centre has formed a panel to investigate the claims of trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar regarding her disabilities. The panel, chaired by a senior officer of the rank of Additional Secretary, aims to verify her claims of being visually impaired and mentally ill. This investigation stems from an affidavit submitted by Khedkar to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Background of the Investigation
Puja Khedkar’s selection as an IAS officer raised several questions. She secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 821 despite her low examination marks. This was due to the special concessions she received based on her claimed disabilities. These concessions allowed her to clear the UPSC exams.
Transfer and Allegations
On Thursday, Khedkar was transferred from Pune to Washim. This transfer followed allegations of her misusing power. She allegedly sought special privileges from the Collector’s office that her designation did not permit.
Avoidance of Medical Examinations
Khedkar avoided attending medical tests to verify her disabilities on six different occasions. She missed five scheduled medical examinations between April 22, 2022, and August 26, 2022. Additionally, she did not appear for a crucial MRI on September 2, meant to assess her vision loss.
Controversial MRI Report
Khedkar submitted an MRI report from an external center, which the UPSC rejected. The UPSC then challenged her selection in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). On February 23, 2023, CAT ruled against her. However, her MRI certificate was later accepted, confirming her appointment as an IAS officer.
Committee’s Role and Report
The newly formed committee has been directed to submit its report within two weeks. The panel’s findings will play a crucial role in determining the validity of Khedkar’s claims and her future as an IAS officer.
