CBI Arrests Ex-Principal of RG Kar Hospital in Corruption Case

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the hospital. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into a larger corruption scandal that has shaken one of Kolkata’s renowned government-run medical institutions.

CBI Arrests Sandip Ghosh in Financial Misconduct Case

Sandip Ghosh, along with three other individuals, was detained following a prolonged inquiry by the CBI. The other accused are Biplav Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan. These arrests follow allegations of severe financial irregularities that have plagued RG Kar Medical College in recent years.

Officials revealed that Ghosh was subjected to intense questioning over two weeks and even underwent a polygraph test. His alleged bodyguard, Afsar Ali Khan, was also caught in a viral video threatening a former principal, further escalating the case’s gravity.

Allegations of Corruption and Irregularities

The case began when Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar hospital, accused Afsar Ali of selling bio-medical waste illegally. In 2023, Ali wrote to the state vigilance department, highlighting massive corruption at the hospital and specifically naming Ghosh, Hazra, Singha, and Khan.

The CBI charged Ghosh and the others with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, marking these as serious, non-bailable offenses. These charges stem from their alleged involvement in financial misconduct that could have severe legal implications for all accused.

High Court Orders and Nationwide Protests

The FIR was lodged after the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation from Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT). Sandip Ghosh’s tenure as principal spanned from February 2021 to September 2023. Although he was transferred in October 2023, he managed to resume his role shortly thereafter.

Ghosh’s leadership came under severe scrutiny following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor inside the hospital’s seminar hall. This heinous crime, discovered on August 9, led to widespread protests across West Bengal, highlighting security lapses at the institution.

Further Legal Trouble for Sandip Ghosh

Additionally, Ghosh has been called in by the Kolkata Police for allegedly disclosing the identity of the rape victim, a serious violation of privacy laws. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended his membership in response to these accusations, further isolating him from the medical community.

This case continues to unfold, revealing deep-rooted corruption and serious criminal offenses within Kolkata’s healthcare system. The CBI is expected to proceed with further investigations to uncover the extent of misconduct and bring those responsible to justice.
