Brazil Court Suspends X Amid Musk Feud

Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered the immediate suspension of the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, amid a fierce legal feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk. The suspension was mandated by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after the company failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil within the court-mandated deadline.

Moraes’ decision is the latest episode in an ongoing conflict with Musk, also involving the freezing of Starlink’s financial accounts in Brazil. The justice imposed this suspension, insisting that X comply with all pending court orders, which include paying fines amounting to 18.5 million reais (approximately Rs 27.66 crore).

Moraes Orders Suspension and Fines

Justice Moraes ordered telecommunications regulator Anatel to enforce the suspension and confirm its execution to the court within 24 hours. He further warned against attempts to bypass the suspension using virtual private networks (VPNs), imposing potential fines of up to 50,000 reais (about Rs 7.47 lakh) per day for violators.

X’s management acknowledged the suspension on Thursday, expecting Moraes’ decision after failing to appoint a legal representative in Brazil. Earlier this year, the justice had demanded X block several accounts linked to investigations into digital militias accused of spreading misinformation and hate.

Musk’s Response and Ongoing Legal Disputes

Elon Musk denounced these orders as censorship, shutting down X’s offices in Brazil but maintaining platform availability within the country. In a related move, Brazil’s Supreme Court also froze local bank accounts of Starlink, a satellite internet company partially owned by Musk. Following this, Starlink petitioned the court to lift the financial blockade.

This legal battle marks a significant standoff between Brazil’s judiciary and Musk’s companies, underscoring a clash of authority and corporate interests. The broader implications of this suspension will impact Brazil’s digital landscape and the operations of Musk’s businesses within the region.
