Sunita Williams’ Space Mission Update: Boeing’s Starliner Advances
Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are one step closer to returning from space following a successful hot fire test of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. The test, conducted while the spacecraft was docked at the International Space Station (ISS), marks a significant milestone in their mission.
Successful Hot Fire Test
The crucial hot fire test involved sequentially firing 27 thrusters on the Starliner spacecraft. The test provided essential data for the upcoming Crew Flight Test. Boeing’s flight director, Chloe Mehring, oversaw the test, ensuring all thrusters performed at peak thrust ratings between 97% and 102%.
Testing Procedure
The Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters were activated in one-pulse sequences. Aft-facing thrusters fired for 1.2 seconds, while other thrusters operated for 0.4 seconds. The test results showed stable performance and reliable system operation.
Crew Feedback and Future Steps
Williams and Wilmore, aboard Starliner Calypso, provided real-time feedback during the test. They will participate in undock-to-landing simulations next week to prepare for their return to Earth. A Flight Test Readiness Review is scheduled for late next week to evaluate the gathered data.
Extended Mission
Initially, the mission was planned for seven days to test the Starliner for human flights. However, technical issues have extended their stay aboard the ISS. Despite this, the successful test brings them closer to returning home.
