Boeing Starliner Lands Safely; Astronauts Remain on ISS
Boeing’s Starliner space capsule successfully landed on Earth on Saturday after undocking from the International Space Station (ISS) without its intended astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore. The NASA test pilots will stay at the space station until February next year due to technical issues that prevented their safe return.
The Starliner capsule, which launched in early June, landed near White Sands Space Harbour, New Mexico, at around 9:31 am (IST), completing a six-hour journey back to Earth. The spacecraft encountered problems, including thruster failures and helium leaks, leading NASA to decide that it was too risky for the astronauts to return on the Starliner.
Dana Weigel, the ISS manager, stated that Williams and Wilmore are adjusting well and are following exercise programs necessary to maintain their health in a zero-gravity environment. They will return on a SpaceX Crew Dragon in February 2025. Elon Musk’s SpaceX will launch its next vehicle at the end of September, which will travel with two astronauts, making room for Williams and Wilmore to return to Earth.
The June 2024 launch was Boeing’s first test flight with astronauts aboard, marking a pivotal moment for commercial spaceflight capabilities. However, it faced issues soon after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions. NASA and Boeing plan to conduct a full inspection and analysis of the problems faced during the flight to improve future missions.
