The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the Congress party’s commitment to its electoral promises regarding the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in states where it holds power. Responding to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent remarks criticizing the Modi government’s announcement of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad highlighted the Congress’s failure to implement the OPS in states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, despite making it a central issue in their election campaigns.
During a press conference, Prasad pointed out that the Congress had made the OPS a significant political issue over the past two years, even to the extent of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra announcing its implementation in Himachal Pradesh if the party was elected to power. However, after gaining control of these states, the Congress has not fulfilled this promise, leading the BJP to accuse them of misleading voters with false promises.
Prasad emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is committed to taking decisions that are in the public interest, after careful consideration. He contrasted this with what he described as the Congress’s habit of making ad-hoc decisions for political gain. “Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party need to understand that running a country like India requires serious and considered decision-making. Adhocism doesn’t work here,” Prasad remarked.
The BJP leader also criticized Rahul Gandhi personally, accusing him of bluffing the public with promises that are not backed by action. “Rahul Gandhi, what are you doing? How much longer will you bluff the people? Tell the truth for once, and if you promise something, make sure you deliver,” he added.
In his attack on the Congress, Prasad also pointed out that the party had not included the OPS in its Lok Sabha election manifesto, suggesting that the Congress itself doubts the feasibility of implementing the scheme on a national scale.
Earlier, Mallikarjun Kharge had taken a dig at the Centre, stating that the ‘U’ in the newly announced Unified Pension Scheme stands for the Modi government’s ‘U-turns’. This comment came after the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Modi, approved the UPS, which guarantees a pension of 50% of the average basic pay for government employees after a minimum of 25 years of service. The UPS also guarantees a minimum pension of Rs 10,000 per month for those who have served at least 10 years.
The BJP’s counterattack highlights the ongoing political battle over pension schemes, with both parties seeking to sway public opinion in their favor as they prepare for upcoming elections.
