On Sunday, the BJP expelled former Haryana minister Ranjit Singh Chautala and seven other leaders for six years after they chose to contest the upcoming elections as independent candidates. Chautala made the decision to leave the party after being denied a ticket for the Rania seat, which he represented as an independent MLA.
The Haryana BJP’s chief, Mohan Lal Badoli, announced the immediate expulsion of these leaders for a period of six years. Besides Chautala, the expelled leaders include Sandeep Garg (contesting from Ladwa), Zile Ram Sharma (Assandh), Devender Kadian (Ganaur), Bachan Singh Arya (Safidon), Radha Ahlawat (Meham), Naveen Goel (Gurugram), and Kehar Singh Rawat (Hathin).
Chautala had previously quit his Assembly membership before joining the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year. He faced an unsuccessful bid in the parliamentary elections from Hisar.
The 90-member Haryana Assembly is scheduled to go to polls on October 5, with vote counting set for October 8. The BJP aims to return to power for a third consecutive term in the state.
In another development, the Haryana Congress expelled 13 leaders on Friday for “anti-party activities” related to their decision to contest the elections as independent candidates. Many leaders from both the BJP and Congress were upset over being denied tickets, but both parties have managed to placate most of them.
