After leaving the PDP in 2020, Zulfikar Ali joined the J&K Apni Party, where he served as Vice President.

His switch to the BJP is viewed as a significant boost for the party, especially within the Gujjar community, where Zulfikar Ali is a well-respected figure. His induction into the BJP, in the presence of senior leaders like G Kishan Reddy, Tarun Chugh, and Ravinder Raina, signals the party’s intent to strengthen its base in the region.
