US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, focusing on advancing negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire and a deal for hostages. The call also included Vice President Kamala Harris, who is set to formally accept the Democratic nomination for the upcoming presidential election on November 5.
This discussion follows US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent trip to the Middle East, which ended on Tuesday without achieving an agreement between Israel and Hamas on a truce. Blinken, alongside mediators from Egypt and Qatar, had hoped a US “bridging proposal” could help close gaps between the conflicting parties in the ongoing Gaza war.
A White House statement revealed that Biden and Netanyahu deliberated on the ceasefire and hostage release, aiming to de-escalate regional tensions. Biden had anticipated pushing Netanyahu to reconsider a new Israeli demand to maintain forces along the land corridor between Egypt and Gaza, known as the Philadelphi Corridor.
This corridor, a critical 14.5-km stretch along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, has been a point of contention. Israel captured the corridor in late May after demolishing tunnels it claimed were used for smuggling weapons to Gaza militants.
The Biden administration views a Gaza ceasefire as a high priority. Despite close proximity to a potential deal, finalizing an agreement has been challenging. Biden, currently vacationing on an 8,000-acre ranch in Santa Ynez Valley, California, is dedicated to resolving the conflict.
As discussions continue, Hamas demands a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, including the Philadelphi Corridor, while Israel insists on retaining control of this strategic area.
