The nationwide Bharat Bandh scheduled for August 21, called by Dalit and Adivasi organizations in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling on SC/ST reservations, will not impact the bustling markets of Delhi. According to the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), all 700 markets across Delhi will remain open and fully operational. The CTI, led by Chairman Brijesh Goyal and President Subhash Khandelwal, confirmed this after thorough discussions with over 100 market associations throughout the city.
Despite the call for a Bharat Bandh by various groups, the Delhi business community has not been approached or requested to support the strike. Major market areas such as Kashmiri Gate, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, Naya Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Sadar Bazar, Karol Bagh, Kamla Nagar, Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, and Sarojini Nagar have all confirmed that they will continue their operations as usual.
In addition to the markets, all 56 industrial areas in Delhi will remain fully functional. The CTI emphasized that no disruptions are expected in the city’s commercial sector, ensuring a normal business day for all involved.
The Bharat Bandh, organized to demand stronger representation and protection for marginalized communities, will see Dalit and Adivasi organizations pushing for justice and equality for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) is at the forefront of this protest, challenging a recent Supreme Court decision that they believe undermines previous rulings on reservations.
NACDAOR is calling for a new Act of Parliament to secure reservation provisions for SCs, STs, and OBCs, proposing that these be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to protect them from judicial interference. Additionally, they are demanding the release of caste-based data on government employees to ensure fair representation.
While the Bharat Bandh is expected to cause some disruptions in public transport and commercial offices, essential services like ambulances, drinking water, and electricity will remain unaffected. Banks, schools, colleges, and government offices in Delhi will also continue their operations without interruption.
