Aakhir Tak – In Depth
West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim sparked controversy by referring to BJP leader Rekha Patra as ‘maal’ while discussing women’s protests in Sandeshkhali. His comment has drawn strong backlash from the BJP, who labeled the remark as offensive.
Background on the Sandeshkhali Protests
Earlier this year, Sandeshkhali came into the national spotlight after women protested against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, alleging land grabbing and exploitation. Rekha Patra led this protest, being the first to file a sexual harassment complaint. The BJP leveraged this issue against the TMC-led government during the Lok Sabha elections, giving Patra a ticket from Basirhat, where Sandeshkhali falls. However, Patra lost the election.
BJP’s Reaction and Suvendu Adhikari’s Demand
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari condemned Hakim’s statement, calling it derogatory. He demanded legal action, saying, “Rekha Patra is a Scheduled Caste woman; this is an insult to her entire community.”
Criticism of the TMC Government
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul also criticized Hakim’s remark, calling it a testament to the TMC government’s outlook on women. She alleged that TMC considers women in Bengal as ‘maal,’ indicating their disregard for women’s respect and rights.
Swipe at Mamata Banerjee
The BJP further criticized Mamata Banerjee, calling Hakim’s comment a reflection of her government’s treatment of women.
