In a disturbing incident in West Bengal, a man has been arrested for threatening a woman doctor while intoxicated. The event took place at Bhatar State General Hospital in Purba Bardhaman district. Susanta Roy, a civic volunteer, was apprehended by the police after the woman doctor lodged a formal complaint against him.
According to the complaint, Roy, who was under the influence of alcohol, became aggressive when the doctor was on night duty. He reportedly threatened her, saying that she could face similar consequences as a trainee doctor who was recently the victim of a serious crime at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim was allegedly raped and murdered, leading to the arrest of a civic police volunteer.
The police reported that Roy had visited the hospital for treatment and became irate when his treatment was delayed. He then made the threatening statement, referencing the tragic incident in Kolkata. This threat led to a significant response from the medical community. Doctors and nurses at Bhatar State General Hospital staged a protest, demanding justice and better protection for healthcare workers.
Dr. Subarna Goshwami, District Deputy Chief Medical Officer, expressed concerns over the safety of medical professionals. She emphasized the need for authorities to ensure the protection of doctors and other healthcare workers, especially in light of recent events.
The woman doctor involved in the incident has called for stringent action against the accused, underscoring the need for police investigations to determine the motive behind Roy’s threatening behavior. The community and healthcare workers are rallying for justice and safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
